Static IP for Algo Trading in India: Why You Need One and How to Set It Up

SEBI's algo trading framework ties broker API access to a registered static IP. Here's what that means and how to get a fixed IP that works anywhere.

If you place orders through a broker API — using Python scripts, Amibroker, TradingView webhooks or a third-party algo platform — your broker will increasingly ask you to register a static IP address. Orders from any other IP can be rejected.

Why brokers now ask for a static IP

In February 2025 SEBI issued a framework for the safer participation of retail investors in algorithmic trading. One of its key controls is that API access should be tied to the client, and brokers have implemented this by whitelisting the static IP addresses that each client registers. Brokers have been rolling the requirement out on their own timelines, so check your broker's current rules and deadlines before you go live.

The problem: most Indian home and mobile connections have dynamic IPs that change regularly. If your IP changes, your API orders stop working until you update the registration.

Your options

  • A static IP from your ISP, usually only on business plans and tied to one location.
  • A cloud server (VPS) with a fixed IP, which means running your strategy on the server.
  • A static IP VPN, which gives your laptop, desktop or VPS one fixed IP that works from any internet connection.

We compare these in more depth in how to get a static IP address in India.

Why a static IP VPN suits traders

  • One IP to register with your broker, no matter where you trade from.
  • Works when you switch between home broadband and a mobile hotspot.
  • Keep trading while travelling — your broker still sees your registered Indian IP.
  • A dedicated IP is never shared, so another user cannot place orders from "your" IP.

Choosing the right plan

For algo trading we recommend our Premium High Speed plan. It uses WireGuard, which has lower overhead and faster reconnects than OpenVPN, and is listed with algo-trading support. Choose an Indian IP in Mumbai to keep your route to Indian exchanges short.

Setting it up

  • Buy a Premium High Speed plan with an Indian location from our pricing page.
  • Install WireGuard on the machine that runs your strategy and import the configuration.
  • Connect, then confirm your public IP matches your dedicated IP.
  • Register that IP in your broker's API or developer console.
  • Keep the VPN connected while your strategy runs; most WireGuard apps can start it automatically.

Common questions

  • Can I use the same IP on two machines? Yes — the Premium plan supports up to 10 users, as long as your broker allows it.
  • Will the IP change if I renew? No. The IP stays assigned to you while your plan is active.
  • Does it add latency? A little, since traffic goes through the VPN server. Choosing a nearby location such as Mumbai keeps this small.
